A month of March to explore the gastronomy of Extremadura

There is no better way to get to know Extremadura than through its flavors, and for this it is a good opportunity to take advantage of the different gastronomic fairs in which the star products are showcased.

In March, three important fairs are held in the region, which can be visited during this month trying the main Extremaduran gastronomic products, all of them related to Extremaduran agricultural products.

It all starts in Llerena with the didactic slaughter and the sausage fair that will take place on March 11; We will continue through Villanueva del Fresno and its cross-border gurumelo days, from the 17th to the 19th; and we finish in Almendralejo, visiting its wine and oil fair, from the 29th to the 31st.

The XXVII edition of the Didactic Matanza and the XXIV Llerena Sausage Fair, which is declared a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest, is celebrated in the town’s main square this month.

The day of this celebration begins with a tasting of traditional migas and sweets, and after the didactic butchering of the pig – in which a professional in the field explains the process – a tasting of meats and pork tastes will be offered accompanied by a great Extremaduran stew. ; Different stands will also be set up in the square where you can buy all types of Iberian sausages.


Villanueva del Fresno pays tribute to the gurumelo with the seventeenth edition of the Gurumelo Cross-border Fair, also declared of Regional Interest.

During the weekend from the 17th to the 19th, tastings and live cooking workshops are held. In addition, there will be mycological days, children’s activities and cultural entertainment.

The town offers more than 2,000 kilos of product for sale. During these days, the bars and restaurants in the town and in the towns of neighboring Alentejo prepare different dishes in which gurumelo is the star product. One of the most special moments is the traditional trip to the communal farm to harvest this product.


The twenty-second edition of the Almendralejo Wine and Olive Show (Iberovinac) will feature the participation of more than 60 exhibitors. This edition seeks to reinforce the Almendralejo Ciudad del Cava brand; the Ribera del Guadiana DOP; the Wine Route and the Ribera del Guadiana Cava and the wines of the Land of Extremadura. Prominence will also be given to sommeliers and restaurant managers.

Attendees will be able to enjoy wine and cava tastings, table olives, oils and live cooking with Extremaduran chefs. In addition, there will be technical sessions, conferences and round tables. It will also host the WineInnovation Summit.
