The Minister of Agriculture, Luis Planas, will inaugurate the Zafra and 568 traditional International Livestock Fair of San Miguel this Tuesday, at 6:30 p.m. in the Central Pavilion of the fairgrounds. He will be accompanied by the president of the Extremadura Regional Government, Guillermo Fernández Vara, and the mayor of Zafra and president of the Fair Entity, José Carlos Contreras.
This year, the FIG will bring together at the fairgrounds, between September 28 and October 1, almost 2,000 heads of cattle for exhibition and sale from 150 farms from all over Spain. At the same time, seven technical days will be held, eleven national morphological competitions for the different breeds and the official auctions, which will be held on September 30 and October 1.
The public will be able to access the warehouses to visit the livestock, but with access control. What there will not be is a trade fair, nor exhibitions, nor festive booths.
The Fair Entity thus tries to maintain the livestock and professional nature of the event after last year’s break due to the pandemic. All livestock and professional activities included in the program will be in person, but the virtual fair will also be maintained so that it can reach more people.
José Carlos Contreras explained this Monday that the priority in this edition was to have animals present, since livestock is the origin of the fair. “The FIG could not allow the warehouses to be empty for two consecutive years.” The mayor also influenced the change of date of the contest, from Tuesday to Thursday, which is an important measure that has been taken to avoid large concentrations of people.
The program of activities of the FIG includes for today, at 09:00, the beginning of the morphological competitions of breeds in their respective buildings: Purebred Spanish Horses, Iberian Pigs, Precocious Sheep (Fleschschaf, Precoz Merino, lle de France and Berrinchon du Cher), Merina and Retinta.
Tomorrow, Wednesday, also at 9:00 a.m., the morphological contests of the PRE, Iberian Pig, Precocious Sheep, Merina, Retinta and Charolesa horse breeds will continue.
Among other activities, at 10:00 a.m., the National Select Pork Association (ANPS) will develop its technical day in the Central Pavilion assembly hall of the fairgrounds in which the Duroc breeding program and the certified quality seal will be discussed, Duroc genetic companies that are committed to Iberian.
At 10:30 a.m., on the qualification track, the prizes for the morphological competition of the Charolais beef breed will be awarded.
150 troops will ensure security
The Local Extraordinary Security Board of Zafra met this Monday to establish the device for the International Livestock Fair that is held from today until October 1.
There will be more than 150 members of the State Security Corps and Forces who will ensure the safety of citizens and the control of crowds. In addition, the weekend, October 1 and 2, will be monitored for possible spontaneous celebrations such as macrobotellones.
